“KIDS RIDING FOR KIDS”
“15 year old Alex Cross-Nicholls accompanied by her sister Erin and their horse Skipa Scorpion have been traveling to different events this summer to show fellow riders their unique talent of bridleless riding.
Bridleless riding is the art of being able to ride a horse with only a saddle. The horse wears nothing on its head, which for many riders is where most of the horses control comes from. Bridleless riding is done strictly from leg cues. This exposes the rider to the potential risk of losing control over the 1,000lbs animal they are riding.
Alex has been riding since she was 7 years old and her sister since she was 5. They have had many experiences with horses from taking in rescue horses to showing on the Quarter horse circuit. Alex and Erin have both had great years with their horses. Alex first learned that she could ride bridless when her dad dared her to ride without a headstall. At first Alex was nervous but after she and Jake had taken their first steps, she knew that she could do something with it. With the guidance of Pat and Patti Carter, Alex has improved her riding ability.
When Alex had been asked to participate at the Can Am Extravaganza in London she could not refuse, for Alex knew that this would be a great experience. Alex then thought that this unique talent could be used to do some good. She then contacted the Toronto Sick Kids Foundation to see if she could help raise money. Alex and Erin are now volunteering their time to ride at shows on behalf of Toronto Sick Kids. Alex and Erin are enjoying their summer showing at different events and are happy to be helping out.
Alex would like to thank Minor Brothers Feed & Fencing for the sponsorship and support. She hopes to see you at the Smithville fair! |
